Fountain Flash Mob
02 September 2011
It was 12:25, on a sunny Friday afternoon. Middle school
students were finishing their lunch break and meandering around the
fountain area, when a sudden burst of music erupted from the
bushes. Heads swivelled and ears perked up, as in the corner of our
eyes we saw a group of five students spontaneously erupt into some
kind of synchronised dance. Then in a blink of an eye, another
group of students raced to their sides, united with the dancers and
joined the impulsive dance. As Beyonce's 'Move Your Body' blasted
through the air, the crowd engulfed the ever-growing group of
dancers, gazing hypnotised at the spectacle and not knowing what to
make of it, or who would jump in next.
The the7th and 8th graders were flowing in
from all directions, and then combining with their peers. With each
new addition the enthusiasm of the crowd and dancers increased, as
the students were able to release their built up exhilaration of
being part of something so unanticipated. For weeks the
7th and 8th graders had been keeping what
they were planning secret, and constantly practising with the
expert help of their dance teacher Mr Reed. As the music faded away
one by one, each student still out of breath casually walked back
to his or her afternoon lesson in the ACS Cobham middle school,
leaving only the confused on-lookers to gape by the fountain.
