Welcome from Early Childhood Principal, Chantal Theron
An
Early Childhood education supports the crucial development of a
young child's cognitive, social, emotional and physical abilities.
At ACS Doha, our focus is on the development of the whole-child in
a language-rich and caring environment that encourages active
participation and meaningful learning.
Each young child is unique and develops at his or her own pace.
Our teachers' expert knowledge of child development and educational
practices enables them to plan enriched and intensive learning
experiences, including self-initiated activities, teacher guided
lessons, small group interactions, and large group
experiences.
ACS Doha teachers plan lessons that integrate and interweave the
different areas of our Early Childhood curriculum.
Their lessons:
- are developmentally appropriate
- provide a strong development in number sense, logical thinking
and numeracy
- encourage both discussing and thinking
- build strong foundations in language development, phonemic
awareness and literacy
- develop and enrich vocabulary
- enable each child to reach goals that are challenging, yet
achievable
- build social skills: taking turns, communicating effectively,
and respecting different opinions
- develop confidence and appropriate risk-taking
- sustain concentration and persistence with challenging
tasks
- foster creative and physical development
- develop an appreciation and care for the child's world.
A young child's play is also an important learning experience.
Through structured play, a child practices and consolidates skills
and has many opportunities to apply newly acquired knowledge to
real situations. ACS Doha teachers support structured child's play
by providing enriched vocabulary, extending learning situations,
and guiding links to other relevant experiences.
The environment plays an important part in Early Childhood
education. The ACS Doha community and campus enable us to provide a
welcoming, supportive, and stimulating environment. Our community's
cultural diversity enriches and broadens daily life and seasonal
events and activities. Our new campus provides numerous
opportunities in which to discover, explore, and play.
The Early Childhood programme is situated in a cluster of
classrooms adjacent to the outdoor play area. In 2011 there will be
three groups - PreK/3 year olds, PreK/4 year olds and
Kindergarten/5 year olds. Our classes will have qualified EC
classroom teachers, teaching assistants, and specialists in
Physical Education (PE), art and music, English as an Additional
Language (EAL), and Learning Support. There is a dedicated Lower
School library.
