Welcome from Middle School Principal, Dale Taylor
ACS Doha's Middle School
nurtures the intellectual, social, and emotional development of
adolescents as they move from a concrete mode of thought to a more
abstract level of thinking. The curriculum is structured to provide
the tools and skills for students to assume increasing
responsibility for themselves and for their education. Our aim is
to deliver a sound Middle School educational programme that
successfully meets the needs of all our students in our welcoming
and supportive learning community.
We are delighted to announce that ACS Doha is now a
candidate school* for the IB Middle Years Programme. The
school is pursuing authorisation as an IB World School. These are
schools that share a common philosophy - a commitment to high
quality, challenging, international education that ACS Doha
believes is important for our students.
We offer a rigorous academic curriculum of English, mathematics,
science, humanities, world languages, and fine arts that challenges
students to become independent, curious thinkers. Teachers
emphasise active learning, using a student-centred approach and a
variety of assessment techniques. Although our programme is
challenging, we seek to provide support (Learning Support and EAL),
to those who require it, ensuring that every child has the
potential to be successful.
We provide experiences that contribute to the physical, social,
and emotional development of all our students. We offer an array of
after-school clubs and events, an extracurricular drama production
and extended field trips.
Our curriculum provides:
- strong core academics in mathematics, humanities, English,
science, and world languages (Spanish/French/Arabic). Arabic is
offered as a native language.
- Islamic Studies - develops an understanding for the main themes
of Islamic life, worship, sacred books
- Qatari History - is integrated in to Humanities and provides an
opportunity for students to learn about the local traditions, the
history and culture of Qatar
- standardised testing in reading, writing and mathematics which
gives diagnostic information on student progress, and an ongoing
evaluation of the school's academic programme.
- challenging coursework which is collaborative, meaningful and
engaging
- an advisory programme that supports student learning by having
students analyse and evaluate how they learn best. Topics, such as,
socialisation and peer pressure, issues of identity, and making
good decisions are covered.
- breadth, diversity and exposure to art, music, ICT/multimedia,
PSHE and physical education.
The Middle School classrooms, grades 6-8 (ages 11-14), occupy
the lower wing of the school adjacent to the central courtyard and
sports centre. Students are based in grade-level homerooms for the
advisory programme. Students move independently from class to
class. Student schedules are tailored to their individual academic
needs. All teachers are specialists in their subject area: English,
mathematics, science, humanities, Arabic, Spanish, French, ICT,
PE/PSHE, art, music, EAL and Learning support. There is a dedicated
Middle School library.
*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer
any of its three academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme
(PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the Diploma Programme
(and in addition the IB Career-related Certificate).
