3D Printer Arrives at ACS Egham
26 September 2011
Exciting news for the ACS Egham's trailblazing Design and
Technology department as a couple of weeks ago the 3D printer
arrived to open up the world of rapid prototyping to all MS/HS
students. The machine is 'state of the art' and can be viewed at
the manufacturers website Objet. After a
two day training session for the members of the Design Technology
department including Mr. Belcher, Mr. Spicer and Mr. Weatherley the
machine is already in action.
If you are one of those already asking "What you can't print in
3D" then make sure to visit the department and see what the
students are up to. It is designed to print in 3-Dimensions to an
accuracy of 0.1mm! It is ideal for design students looking to
produce highly accurate models for visual aids, fit and assembly
testing and functional applications in plastic. Models produced by
Objet24 can be painted, drilled, machined, uses as a mold orused
for vacuum forming!

Grade 8 are the first students to use the machine to design and
print components for their robotic project - see the photo to see
the wheels that student from Grade 8A have printed and designed.
Not only will MYP students benefit but the expanding and popular
Design Technology IB Diploma course students will be focusing on
use of CAD and CAM machinery to produce excellent functioning
prototypes.
