English language support
English as an Additional Language (EAL) for 1st to 10th
Grades
The school's English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme
is designed to help students whose native language is not English.
The EAL programme is structured around two principles based on
research findings:
- children learn languages most effectively through
immersion
- children's native language skills influence their rate of
learning and proficiency in a second language.
During the school day, children in the EAL programme are
immersed in regular classrooms and supported by specially trained
EAL teachers, who ensure the most effective learning strategies are
in place. They focus on each student's ability to acquire basic
vocabulary, and vocabulary relevant to classroom topics.
