IB Middle Years Programme
The IBMYP is a course of study designed to meet the educational
requirements of students between the ages of 11 and 16 years. The
programme is not a curriculum; it provides a philosophical
framework with a holistic approach to education. The IBMYP aims to
educate the whole person and to show the impact of each individual
on the world around them. The programme fosters intercultural
awareness and the importance of communication. Its goal is to
constantly place learning within a context, and to make explicit
the relationship between the various disciplines.
The IBMYP defines five 'Areas of Interaction'. These Areas are an
explicit expression of the common realities shared by all subject
areas, and of all of the varied ways we impact the world through
education:
- Approaches to Learning emphasises that the
student is at the centre of the learning process, and must develop
responsibility for the multitude of learning strategies required to
be a successful learner.
- Human Ingenuity looks at the creative power of
the human mind, how this has influenced the world and the
consequences, both good and bad, of these creations.
- Community and Service confirms our
responsibility to our immediate community, and the world around
us.
- Health and Social Education looks at the range
of human issues that exist in society, such as social structures,
relationships and health.
- Environments considers how humans interact
with the world at large, including the natural, built and virtual
environments.
The IB provides a rigorous framework for assessment, and student
work is evaluated according to criteria that clearly reflect the
holistic philosophy of the programme. Self assessment is an
integral part of the process.
