ACS Hillingdon hosts the Model United Nations

ACS Hillingdon recently hosted its first Model United Nations (MUN) event this year.

The event sees students from ACS and local schools take on different roles of the United Nations and debate important topics. Students attending were assigned a country and on the day, form the ‘delegation’ representing each ‘member state’. This year’s theme was ‘Tolerance in Society’ and students discussed hard-hitting subjects including the question of euthanasia and the right to die with dignity, the threat of cyber interference to democracy and eradicating child labour and modern slavery.

Over one hundred students from ACS Hillingdon, Alconbury High School, Lakenheath American High School and Swakeleys School for Girls, took part in the debates. Derek Johnson, organiser of the ACS Hillingdon Model United Nations event, commented: "MUN events provide an excellent opportunity for young people to develop their international and global understanding, as well as practising communication and debating skills. There is no shying away from difficult subjects and the students involved were able to debate some truly thought-provoking topics."

"All the students that took part performed very well and addressed each topic with real insight and understanding,” Derek continues. ACS Hillingdon has been involved in MUN for a number of years and will be travelling to the Netherlands with 24 students in January 2019 to take part in The Hague International Model United Nations, the largest event of its kind. Over 250 schools and 3,200 students from across the world will be taking part, and ACS students will be representing the countries of Botswana and South Sudan over the five-day conference.
