ACS Hillingdon students shine at Model United Nations

ACS Hillingdon students head to The Hague, Netherlands for the Model United Nations.

Students from ACS Hillingdon School joined 3,200 peers in The Hague, Netherlands in February to experience the Model United Nations (MUN).  MUN is the largest event of its kind and sees student teams from across the world taking on the different roles of the United Nations.

ACS Hillingdon has been involved in MUN for over 15 years and, for this summit, sent two student teams, known as delegations, which represented the countries of Botswana and South Sudan.

“MUN receives hundreds of applications from schools worldwide to attend the conference and we were extremely lucky to be assigned two country delegations. This meant that we were able to send 24 students to the five-day conference,”

comments Derek Johnson, maths teacher and organiser of the ACS Hillingdon MUN teams.

The Model United Nations conference is a simulation of a real meeting of the UN and is hosted in the World Forum Centre.  This means as well as representing countries, students took part in mock-ups of different UN organisations such as the International Court of Justice, the General Assembly, the Environment Commission or the Human Rights Commission.

The teams, who participated in a meeting of the General Assembly, discussed and debated urgent real-life issues including the question of piracy and maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea; strengthening international co-operation to combat tax evasion; and maintaining the Iran Nuclear Deal Framework. Students represented the views and best interests of their country delegations.

 Mr Johnson adds:

“I was extremely proud of our team this year. Several students delivered opening speeches as part of the debates with poise and eloquence in what, at times, could be quite an intimidating environment.  I’m sure the next UN Secretary-General is in our midst!”
