Why the IB Gives Students a Proven Advantage at University
For over 50 years, ACS has been deeply committed to the International Baccalaureate (IB) – one of the most academically rigorous and globally respected school programmes in the world. But beyond reputation, extensive research shows that the IB delivers measurable, long-term advantages for students entering higher education.
A major study conducted by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), in partnership with the IB, provides clear evidence: IB Diploma students outperform their A level peers in several key areas of university access, achievement, and progression.
IB students are more likely to access top universities
One of the most striking findings from the research is that IB Diploma students have a significantly higher chance of securing places at top 20 UK universities. After controlling for academic ability, IB students were 57% more likely to enter a top-tier institution. In matched samples, 45.7% of IB students attended a top 20 university compared to 32.9% of A level students.
This demonstrates that universities recognise the academic strength and preparedness of IB graduates – something ACS sees year after year as our own students receive offers from leading global institutions.
IB students achieve higher university grades
Once at university, IB students continue to excel. The study found that IB Diploma graduates were:
- More likely to earn a first-class honours degree (22.9% vs. 19.4% for A levels)
- More likely to achieve at least a second-class honours degree (84.8% vs. 80.4%)
These results highlight a crucial strength of the IB: it develops the depth of understanding, research skills, and academic independence that universities expect from successful undergraduates.
IB students show strong continuity and academic resilience
The transition from school to university can be a significant challenge for many young people. Yet both IB and A level students showed high continuation rates, with 94.7% of IB students progressing successfully from their first to second year of study. The IB’s emphasis on independent learning – through components like the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge – helps build the resilience and self-management skills needed to succeed in demanding academic environments.
IB graduates are more likely to pursue further study
Six months after graduation, IB students were significantly more likely to continue into further study, while A level students were more likely to enter the workforce immediately. IB graduates were also more often employed in professional, scientific, technical, and health-related fields. This reflects both the ambition and academic orientation of IB students, as well as the broad skill set they develop throughout the programme.
Why ACS students benefit even further
ACS’s long history with the IB strengthens these advantages. With over 50 years of experience delivering the IB, ACS understands how to guide students through its unique challenges and opportunities. Many of our teachers are also IB examiners, giving them insider knowledge of assessment standards and criteria. They know exactly how students can maximise their performance, helping them approach their studies with confidence.
The evidence is clear
The IB isn’t just a rigorous programme, it’s a proven pathway to stronger university outcomes. From higher rates of admission to top universities, to better degree results, to greater academic ambition, IB students consistently stand out.
At ACS, we’re proud to have been part of the IB journey for half a century, and proud to continue preparing students for success at university and beyond.
