Are you passionate about science and enjoy working in a practical, hands-on environment? We are seeking a highly organised and proactive Laboratory Technician to join our High School Science Department at our Cobham Campus.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in supporting the delivery of outstanding science education across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Working closely with teaching staff, you will ensure laboratories are fully prepared, safe, and equipped for engaging practical lessons and examinations.

The Role

As Laboratory Technician, you will provide technical and practical support to the Science Department by preparing resources, maintaining equipment, managing laboratory stock, and ensuring the highest standards of health and safety are upheld.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare equipment, chemicals, materials, and resources for practical lessons, demonstrations, assessments, and examinations
  • Set up and clear laboratory apparatus for teaching activities
  • Prepare standard solutions and specialist materials as required
  • Support teachers during practical activities and demonstrations
  • Assist with the organisation and preparation of practical examinations
  • Maintain laboratories, preparation rooms, and storage areas to a high standard
  • Manage departmental stock, including chemicals, consumables, and equipment
  • Monitor inventory levels and support purchasing processes
  • Carry out routine maintenance, testing, calibration, and minor repairs of scientific equipment
  • Maintain accurate records relating to stock control, safety checks, risk assessments, and purchasing.

Health & Safety

You will play a vital role in promoting a safe working environment by:

  • Ensuring the safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and laboratory materials
  • Maintaining COSHH records and supporting compliance with relevant legislation
  • Conducting risk assessments and routine safety inspections
  • Monitoring safety equipment, including eyewash stations, fume cupboards, first aid supplies, and safety screens
  • Keeping up to date with laboratory safety developments and best practice.

About You

Essential Requirements

  • Experience working in a laboratory, scientific, technical, or educational environment
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety procedures
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Based in the UK/local to Cobham.

Desirable

  • Science qualification or relevant technical qualification
  • Experience working in a secondary school or educational setting
  • Knowledge of COSHH regulations and laboratory risk assessment procedures
  • Experience maintaining laboratory equipment and managing stock control systems.
