ACS top nationally at STEAM competition

A group of 7th and 8th Grade students (12-14 years old) from ACS International School Hillingdon have been crowned champions of the Instant Challenge category at a national STEAM competition, Destination Imagination UK, and have been invited to the Global Finals in May.

As part of the challenge, the winning students developed a non-verbal communication system to tell members of their team how to organise hidden materials. They were given five minutes to prepare and two minutes to complete the task. ACS Hillingdon students won the Instant Challenge due to their creative thinking and teamwork.

The Instant Challenge includes exercises that can be task or performance based, or a combination of both. The challenge encourages students to use their critical thinking skills and creativity that prompt advanced problem-solving skills like rapid ideation and implementation.

Destination Imagination UK is a global community united by the belief that when students have the freedom to grow and collaborate, their confidence explodes, and the world opens up to them in new ways. The competition aims to inspire young people to become creative and collaborative leaders. The organisation provides STEAM programmes and challenges for students across a range of different ages.

John Mendehall, Science Teacher at ACS International Schools, said: “Our students had a wonderful time at Destination Imagination UK competition, and I am so proud of our students for winning the Instant Challenge category. The skills they have gained, such as creative and critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving, are invaluable. At ACS Hillingdon, we ensure our students have access to these opportunities so they stand ready for a future full of opportunity and we hope to see even more students from ACS participate next year.”

Other schools from the ACS International School group also triumphed at the competition, with ACS International School Egham taking home the top spot in the Engineering Challenge.
