ACS’s eLibrary: a remarkable headstart in digital learning and research skills

At ACS International Schools, we are focused on embracing technology to develop responsible digital citizens, helping students learn how to harness its power and use it mindfully, ethically and responsibly. Used well, technology can help students expand their minds, and thrive in a fast-moving world.

Through our enquiry-led learning approach, we teach students how to learn, not what to learn. Critical thinking, independent research, and information literacy are central to education at ACS, and our eLibrary is a key enabler of that.

“The eLibrary can help students research reliable information, and is a better alternative than simply typing on Google and clicking the first thing you see.” – Nicalia, Grade 8

What is the eLibrary?

ACS’s eLibrary is our digital ecosystem that’s packed with resources like premium academic databases, journals, magazines, and media that most students only encounter at university. All students have instant access to authoritative research and academic resources that are carefully structured, screened and presented based on students’ school and age group.

The digital platform can be accessed by members of the ACS community from anywhere in the world, and it’s continuously evolving. Our librarians and digital technology specialists regularly review how it works and which resources it contains, based on feedback from school leaders, teachers, and students.

Why are research skills so important to develop?

In a world of misinformation, AI-generated answers and endless content, research skills, critical thinking and information literacy are now essential life skills. It’s crucial for students to learn how to exercise discernment by evaluating sources, questioning and verifying. Having access to vast quantities of trustworthy, verified resources means students move far beyond just copying and pasting information; instead developing into confident, capable learners.

Developing transferable skills that travel

As a leading international school with a globally diverse and mobile community, it’s an essential part of our approach to ensure students learn valuable transferable life skills that set them up for a bright future. Digital literacy, critical thinking and research skills are high up on the list of skills that travel and can be applied to and valuable in many aspects of modern life. The ACS eLibrary supports us to develop future-ready students who are resilient, open-minded, and motivated to keep learning.

How does the eLibrary offer a genuine learning advantage?

Our digital library of resources is a distinct advantage of an ACS education, helping students build and refine exceptional research and information literacy skills. It supports students in confident, independent learning across subjects and prepares them for IB study and future pathways. Our digital library gives them a remarkable headstart by providing a reliable and trustworthy source of instantly accessible information that is pre-screened to be rigorous and age appropriate. Students can dive straight into high-quality, often university-level research to spark curiosity and creativity, and deepen understanding.

What about away from the classroom?

The benefits of the ACS eLibrary extend well beyond just supporting students with their studies. Away from the curriculum, the platform is also a fantastic resource for helping students explore interests, develop passions and broaden their worldview and understanding of current affairs.

The eLibrary in action

We encourage students to use the eLibrary as much as they can to support their investigations. For example, a recent cohort of Advanced Placement Geography students used the platform’s Environmental Studies database to research places that are currently affected or are susceptible to climate change. This comprehensive database contains trusted, science-based information on environmental issues and sustainability, covering both the physical and social aspects of global change. It also features topic overviews, scholarly journals, news, case studies, and multimedia content to empower students to critically analyse topics.

Rather than wading through an overwhelming amount of information available on the internet and having to check and verify sources, students were able to tap straight into a wealth of credible resources and develop presentations to share their learning. The eLibrary was instrumental in providing the students with the vetted information they needed to produce high-quality work they could be confident in.

This access to trustworthy and up-to-the-minute information is something we are very proud to offer at ACS International Schools, and is all part of our commitment to prepare students for their next steps in life.
