How does the International Baccalaureate Diploma prepare students for an AI future?
At ACS International Schools, our purpose is to inspire the world’s next global thinkers and doers. To do that, we place great emphasis on future readiness through pathways like the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma). We ensure students are fully prepared for an AI future by embracing technology while also cultivating the skills that make us human and can’t be automated.

Why do students choose the International Baccalaureate Diploma?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is a popular alternative to the British GCSE and A Level system and is perfect for international/expat families or those looking for an alternative to traditional British schools.
The IB Diploma is academically rigorous with a heavy workload, and we support students in developing the discipline and organisational skills needed to balance six subjects. The IB is a highly respected qualification around the world, an excellent pathway to universities across the globe, and, because of its focus on human skills and creativity, it puts students at a distinct advantage when it comes to meeting the mounting challenges of an AI world.
According to a recent report surveying 65 admissions officers across 50 UK universities, “Universities are explicitly deprioritising subject knowledge in favour of skills and attitudes.” 69% of admissions officers agree that the International Baccalaureate Diploma is “the best pathway to thrive at university”.

We know that universities now place much more value on a student’s transferable life skills, attributes, and values. This is in no small part because these are the human-centered qualities that AI cannot easily replace. This sends a clear message that the importance of core competencies like teamwork, research skills, reasoning, leadership, evidence evaluation, finely tuned questioning and listening skills, and community engagement is on the rise. These are the AI-proof skills that will help future-ready students thrive in a global workforce.
ACS International Schools’ Chief Executive Robert Harrison says: “We know from our research with Small and Medium Enterprises (which drive most of the global economy) that employers value graduates with strong skills in problem-solving, self-management, working with people, and technology use and development… It is clear that the future belongs to people who know how to learn key skills effectively and apply them with confidence.”
How is AI embedded in our International Baccalaureate Diploma?
AI is a key part of the modern world, and at ACS International Schools we do not shy away from it. As one of the best International Baccalaureate Diploma schools in the UK, ACS’s approach to AI is thoughtful, cautious, and human-centred, regardless of which academic pathway our students choose. We believe that AI is something students (and parents) need to understand, question, and use responsibly, rather than fear or use uncritically. Our education strategy is designed to be human-centred in many different ways, and we help students:
- Prioritise online safety and ethical decision-making.
- Develop critical awareness of how AI works and where it can go wrong.
- Use AI in ways that support learning, rather than replace it.
- Protect their individual voice, creativity, and integrity.
- Understand the ethical, social, and environmental implications of new technologies.
AI brings challenges as well as opportunities, and benefits as well as limitations, and we work hard to ensure we stay constantly up to date as technology evolves. We were recently awarded the Gold AI Quality Mark, and this independent assessment praised our “coherent, values-led and thoughtfully governed approach to AI”.
Why the International Baccalaureate Diploma is an advantage in the age of AI
The International Baccalaureate Diploma gives students a considerable advantage in an AI-driven world, because our well-rounded curriculum has always been as focused on developing personal, social and emotional skills as it is on academic rigour. This isn’t something we’ve added in response to AI; it’s an ethos that has been embedded since day one, and it’s an integral part of our culture at ACS International Schools.
Three core elements of the International Baccalaureate Diploma
Alongside their six chosen subjects, students studying the IB Diploma complete three core elements, all of which help to develop AI-proof skills both in the classroom and outside of it.
Theory of Knowledge (ToK): This element helps students to develop the sophisticated critical thinking and questioning skills essential for navigating AI-generated information and interrogating the nature of ‘truth’ in a digital age.
The extended essay: A 4,000-word independent research project that demands deep thought, synthesis of information from multiple sources, and critical reasoning – skills that machines cannot easily replicate.
Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS): Students take part in community activities and projects that remind us all of the importance of human connection – arguably the most AI-proof skill there is.
