What parents are really looking for in a private school today
It used to be the case that, when searching for the best private school for your child, a quick look at things like status, Ofsted results, reputation and exam results was enough to make a confident decision.
But these days, families are choosing private schools in different ways, and for different reasons. Today’s parents understand that a good private school not only has impressive traditional credentials, but also aligns with their child’s personality, needs and stage of development. They also have a deeper understanding of how vital wellbeing is to a child’s education, so good levels of mental health and pastoral care are much more highly valued.
Given all these extra considerations, it’s no surprise that domestic and expat parents face choice overload, intensified by the sheer volume of information available online. Add to that the rise of AI-generated content (with some ‘facts’ more accurate than others), and the overwhelm becomes virtually impossible to cut through.
It starts with knowing what you’re looking for, and we’re here to help with a list of the important things (beyond results and reputation) to look out for when choosing the right private school for your child:
A sense of belonging
Belonging is a core foundation of any community, and it’s one of the most important deciding factors for families today. As an international school group, at ACS we know this only too well, and belonging is not an add-on; it’s central to who we are. Parents want to enrol their children in a school where they know they will feel known, accepted and able to be themselves, in a welcoming community that feels like a home from home.
Wellbeing before performance
Quite rightly, parents now prioritise the wellbeing of their children because they know it’s the foundation for learning and growth, as an enabler of confidence, resilience and independence. Private schools like ACS International are well-equipped to go above and beyond in this area, recognising that children learn (and perform) best when they feel safe, supported and balanced.
Confidence and independence as core outcomes
Parents looking for a private school for their children come to ACS seeking reassurance, clarity and honesty, and they like to understand how we foster confidence and independence. We take a very proactive stance on intentionally developing these skills, not just talking about them and treating them as assumed traits. We encourage children to make their own choices, use their voice and take ownership of their own learning.
An emphasis on transferable skills and keeping options open
The future is more uncertain than ever, and a traditional academic education can fall short when it comes to developing the skills needed for a changing and unpredictable world. Transferable skills like critical thinking, problem-solving and enquiry-led learning matter more than early specialisation, and at ACS we believe that students benefit from having flexibility and time to grow before narrowing their pathways.

A readiness for change
At ACS, education is framed as preparation for change, not a single fixed outcome. We focus on future readiness, and preparing our students for the inevitable changes that they will face in their lives. This is an especially important skill for globally mobile children to develop. We focus on helping students develop the confidence and agility to cope with transitions, whether that’s moving to a new school or a new country, or any other major change in their lives.
A focus on strong relationships
Developing the ability to forge and maintain strong relationships with friends, teachers, boarding staff and families is central to the ACS approach. With us, children learn how trust, communication and consistency underpin relationships, wellbeing and confidence. And our parents value the way we genuinely know and support their children as they progress through school.
Offering choice and multiple pathways
There is no one, fixed pathway to success. All children are different, and part of having autonomy over their education is to offer them different opportunities depending on their personality, career aspirations, individual strengths and interests. We offer both the Advanced Placement (AP) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) pathways (both of which are excellent pathways to higher education) so that students can personalise their learning and benefit from reduced pressure, more confidence and less comparison.
Choosing the right private school for your child
There’s no better way to understand if a private school is right for your child than to visit it, walk around the campus and ask staff questions. At ACS International Schools, we host regular open days, and we’re always delighted to welcome families to one of our three beautiful campuses so they can experience what life at ACS is like for themselves.
