What are the best American schools in London?

For expat families relocating from the United States to London for work, and international families seeking a US-style education that offers pathways to prestigious American universities, finding the best American schools in London is a top priority. Children who are used to moving between countries and cultures are incredibly adaptable, and a continuous yet flexible education, wherever they are in the world, supports this.

At ACS International Schools, we understand the unique needs of American families living overseas, and we’re committed to cultivating global citizens. We’re proud to be a trusted choice for US government, military, and corporate families, getting students ready for the next stage in their lives, whether that’s in the workplace or through higher and further education.

What is the American Curriculum?

The American Curriculum is the core educational framework that a US-style education is based on, and is widely recognised by universities around the world. This pathway delivers a continuous, flexible and broad curriculum so that globally mobile children can thrive. Our education is on a par with the quality and ethos of some of the best US public schools (e.g., Arlington or Fairfax County, Virginia).

It isn’t just about academia, though; the best American schools in the UK are grounded in US values and foster an inclusive and diverse environment which feels familiar and welcoming.

“Since I’ve been at ACS Cobham, I’ve grown into a more confident, mature, and open individual. The diversity and inclusivity of the school allowed me to seamlessly transition from Florida…. The school has helped me grow as a student and as a person.”

Students who are looking for greater academic challenge can take the Advanced Placement (AP) as a university-level extension of the American Curriculum. The benefits of the AP include more university credits, stronger applications and a demonstration of readiness for further academic challenge. The AP is a great choice for students looking to attend a US college or university who also perform well under exam conditions and are clear on where they want their studies to go next. We’re proud to say that many of our recent AP graduates have gone on to study at Oxbridge universities.

Which curriculum pathways do American schools offer?

At ACS, our students can graduate with a fully accredited US High School Diploma, awarded through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Our core curriculum is based on AERO Standards from the US, recognised by both the Department of Defense Education Authority (DoDEA) and the State Department’s Office of Overseas Schools. 98% of our graduates continue to higher education, including some of the most selective universities in the US.

How do I find the best American schools in London and Surrey?

London and Surrey have a handful of well-respected American schools on offer, and ACS International Schools are widely considered to be the number one in international education in the UK. Wherever your child is coming from, we support smooth transitions and prepare students for top-tier universities, both in America and throughout the rest of the world.

Our three campuses in Cobham, Egham and Hillingdon cater for students aged 2 to 18 with a truly international education. All of our schools are diverse, inclusive and globally minded, with students from over 100 nationalities represented for a truly multicultural experience.

ACS Hillingdon is a day school, and the only school in London with a US-style campus experience within the M25. The environment we create includes a mix of academic, social and physical aspects of student life that’s typical of American colleges and universities.

ACS Cobham is a boarding and day school with world-class facilities that offers American curriculum options. Both the Hillingdon and Cobham schools offer the US High School Diploma and the International Baccalaureate, along with expert US college counselling and the Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Our third school, ACS Egham is a day school that focuses solely on the International Baccalaureate, and is one of only two UK schools to offer the full IB continuum. Egham offers the High School Diploma but not the AP.

All three schools offer dedicated busing options (extending all the way to West London), which helps London families access our campuses with ease.

Why ACS International Schools are the leading UK American schools

At ACS International Schools, our roots are American (ACS stands for American Community School). Founded in 1967 by American educator Gordon E. Speed and Greek-American businessman Emmanuel J. Poularasto, we began our journey as ‘The American Community College’ to cater for the growing American expat community seeking high-quality education in the UK. We’ve since grown to become the largest international school group in London.

All three schools were built on the principles of a US-style education. While we have a broader international mix these days, our school community feels like home for US families. Around 25-30% of our students, teachers, and school leaders come from the US, with British families comprising 30% of students, and the rest coming from countries all over the world.
