IB Diploma Programme

Studying the IBDP

Our approach to learning in the upper years addresses students’ intellectual, social, emotional and physical wellbeing.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is an academically-challenging programme that ensures students aged 16-18 are ready for success at university and beyond. It has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities due to the fact that IBDP students take responsibility for their own learning, developing critical and creative thinking as well as collaboration, research, self-management and communication skills.

As a group of schools, we have been teaching the IBDP for over fifty years, and many of our teachers are examiners for the programme. Therefore, we have the expertise and knowledge to support and guide students, enabling them to excel and achieve excellent results.

IBDP Subject Areas

The IBDP’s broad and balanced curriculum requires students to study six subjects during their final two years of school – three at higher level and three at standard level.

The curriculum includes:

  • Studies in Language and Literature
  • Language Acquisition
  • Mathematics
  • Sciences
  • The Arts
  • Individuals and Societies

IBDP results are based on a combination of end-of-course examinations and internally and externally-marked coursework.

IBDP Students must complete 3 core elements

Theory of Knowledge

A 100 hour course taught over two years about critical thinking and inquiry into the nature of knowledge. It is assessed through an oral presentation and a 1600-word essay

The Extended Essay

A 4000-word independent research essay into a topic that the student has a particular interest or passion in.

Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)

Students take part in a range of experiences and at least one project. For many this will involve music, drama, sport, service in the local community and collaboration with our partner schools.

I could speak at length about why I would recommend the International Baccalaureate (IB) over other curriculums in the UK, but to keep it concise: the IB was challenging and sometimes overwhelming, yet I believe it adequately prepared me for further education and the working environment. The IB taught me time management and organisational skills, making university life more manageable regarding completing assessments on time and preparing for seminars. Furthermore, the focus on critical thinking and analysis in the IB was particularly beneficial for me as a law student, as I had already developed foundational skills that support my work in drafting cases and witness statements for mock court trials.
