IB school vs traditional British school: what’s the difference?

An IB school is one that offers a rigorous, globally recognised and transferable educational framework. It’s a popular alternative to the British GCSE and A Level system for international/expat families, and also for British families in the UK who are looking for something other than a traditional educational pathway.

But what does it mean to be an IB school, and how does it compare to other systems like the British one? Let’s break it down.

What is the IB?

Let’s start with what the IB actually is and how it works. The International Baccalaureate is an international academic pathway that “develops lifelong learners who thrive and make a difference”, according to the IB’s website. Every IB student is empowered to shape their future with confidence, through an inquiry-based approach, and embedded choice, support, and challenge. The IB pathway follows three stages:

In Lower School, students from 3-11 follow the IBPYP (Primary Years Programme) which focuses on play-based and inquiry-led learning, and building a strong foundation in maths, literacy, science, and beyond.

From there, students aged 11-16 follow the IBMYP (Middle Years Programme), which shapes intellectual curiosity and develops critical, creative and reflective thinking. This is an educational route that’s popular with families looking for an alternative to the GCSE system.

Then, in Upper School, students aged 16-18 take the IBDP (Diploma Programme) or the more vocational IBCP (Career-related Programme), which both prepare students for success at university and beyond. This is a great alternative to the Advanced Placement or A Levels.

IB schools offer a clear and structured pathway into higher education, both in the UK and around the world. But what sets them apart is that students can join at any point without interrupting their education. This is why it’s perfect for international families, and why, at ACS Egham, we are proud to offer the full IB continuum.

What is an IB school?

The International Baccalaureate is a non-profit organisation that was founded in Geneva back in 1968. As a fully accredited IB school, and one of 6000 schools globally, ACS Egham is part of an international network and authorised to offer the full IB curriculum. As an IB school, we are regularly monitored and evaluated, and teachers must undertake specific IB training, and many are also IB examiners. As an international IB school, our teaching community reflects the diversity of our vibrant, multinational student body.

What makes an IB school different from a British school?

Many parents are making the switch from a very exam-focused GCSE system to the IB because they believe that learning isn’t about being able to recite from memory. In the IB system there’s less focus on examination, and instead students are encouraged to be an active participant in their education and ask questions, take ownership, and reflect on their growth.

IB schools focus on how students learn, think and engage with the world. Inquiry, reflection and global awareness shape daily learning experiences, and there’s a strong focus on developing globally transferable attributes like communication, open-mindedness and critical thinking.

And then of course there is the international element, which is such a core part of the IB philosophy. As part of a global network, students are encouraged to see things from many different perspectives, embrace diversity and cultivate a global outlook, with a strong focus on being prepared for a rapidly changing world.

IB schools take a hands-on, applied approach to learning

Another quality that makes IB schools very different to a traditional British education is our emphasis on learning in real-world contexts, bringing subjects to life by applying learning in real scenarios and developing confidence. For example, every year at ACS Egham we take part in THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations) – a four-day simulation of the United Nations for secondary school students that’s held in the World Forum Convention Centre in The Hague. This year’s theme was “Culture and Heritage: Embracing Diversity”.

We also offer hands-on learning experiences, for example our Lego STEM workshops which use Lego SPIKE (an educational robotics and coding kit) to design and programme robots. Students also recently took part in the STEM Racing Journey, which included an engineering visit to Imperial College London, where they explored world-class laboratories and spoke with industry experts in areas such as tribology, fuel technology, and mechanical engineering.

Watch: ACS Egham’s Head of Mathematics, Carol Lai, discusses how the use of conceptual links (as opposed to isolated topics) in the IBMYP helps students to see how ideas build and connect, and also how we use real-life applications to bring subjects to life. Watch here.

IB schools prioritise extra-curricular opportunities

While a traditional British school may offer some extra-curricular activities, at an IB school it’s embedded as a way of life. ACS Egham offers a full spectrum of opportunities, from sports and theatre to music, global trips, and service projects. Each experience is designed to help students grow, connect, and create lifelong memories.

“Parents sing the praises of staff who go the extra mile, from opening classrooms for external providers to run after-school classes to taking the IB theatre students on trips to London productions.” – The Good Schools Guide
