A Day in the Life of an ACS Cobham Boarding Student

At ACS Cobham, we provide a vibrant mix of academics, co-curricular activities, and personal growth—enabling our boarding students to thrive in a truly international and dynamic environment. From engaging in academic classes to exploring hobbies and building lifelong friendships with students from over 50 different countries, every day is packed with opportunities for learning and development.

Morning Routine: Rise and Shine

On weekdays, we begin at 7:30 AM, with a tannoy announcement waking the boarding students. Early risers, such as athletes and swimmers, can leave the houses before for their activities. Cleaners are the first to arrive, making sure the houses are spotless, as the movement in the houses begins as early as 6:15 AM. By 8:10 AM, everyone gathers in the canteen for breakfast with a wide variety of choices: continental, traditional English breakfast, pancakes, waffles, and much more.

Academic Day: School from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Students head to school for their classes from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. In the afternoons, students with senior privileges can head back to Woodlands House to relax or study in a quieter environment if they have free periods. We are fortunate that our boarding houses are located in the heart of campus so the dining hall, classrooms and sports centre are all close by.

Afternoon: A Mix of Activities

From 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, students can enjoy a wide range of activities. The afternoons are a blend of academic-focused and boarding-specific events. Whether it’s sports, cooking sessions, or team-building exercises, there’s something for everyone. Activities might include an external boxing club, strength and conditioning coach sessions, or themed nights like murder mystery quizzes. There’s also the chance to get involved in more relaxed options like puzzles, cards, table tennis, and snooker. The sports centre is open for activities such as five-a-side football, basketball, lane swimming, fitness or volleyball. The IT Genius Bar is also available on Wednesdays for tech troubleshooting.

Our pastoral programme focuses on wellbeing. In the past we have had external visitors come to talk about self-regulation exercises, sleep tips, journaling, online safety, revision skills, and personal safety.

Evening Routine: Dinner and Study Time

At 5:30 PM, it’s time for dinner with a wide variety of options for students. Afterwards, students attend their evening registration to check in with the house parents. It’s an important time to gather any announcements or information they might need for the week.

The evening study sessions begin at 6:30 PM for Fields House (until 7:30 PM) and 7:00 PM for Woodlands House (until 8:30 PM). Some students study independently, while others work in small groups or with tutors. For example, a physics teacher might help prepare students for an upcoming test, or older students serve as peer tutors, helping their younger peers with homework.

Late Evening: Wind Down

As the evening draws to a close, Fields House collects students’ devices at 9:30 PM, ensuring a wind-down period before bed. Bedtime is at 10:30 PM, with the house alarmed for security. Woodlands House follows suit with a 10:45 PM lights-out rule.

Weekends: Exploring and Adventure

Weekends at ACS Cobham are packed with activities. Boarding students have the chance to take trips to nearby attractions, such as Windsor, Brighton, or London. There are cultural excursions, like sightseeing or attending musicals, as well as more student-led activities, including paintballing, go-karting, or taking part in the Race for Life charity run. Local events, fairs, and visits to nearby Cobham village are also on the schedule, giving students a chance to explore British culture and enjoy some downtime.

Strong Community Support

Throughout the week, students have access to strong pastoral care from the House Parents and resident tutors, all of whom live on-site, ensuring there’s always someone available to provide support. Whether students are enjoying the sports facilities, taking part in social activities, or relaxing in their rooms, they are always part of a close-knit, supportive community.

At ACS Cobham, boarding life is about more than just academics; it’s about growing as an individual, building lasting friendships, and experiencing life in a happy, supportive environment.
