Curriculum

Our Lower School curriculum is designed to provide a well-rounded and inquiry-based education that supports the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of young learners. It caters to children aged 2 to 10 (Pre-K to Grade 4) and follows a blend of international best practices. The curriculum integrates global perspectives and celebrates cultural diversity, preparing students to be internationally minded.

In Language Arts, students focus on developing essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, which are fundamental for effective communication. In mathematics, the emphasis is placed on understanding key concepts and applying them to solve real-world problems. Science and social studies provide opportunities for hands-on exploration and experimentation, allowing students to build a deeper knowledge and understanding of the world around them. These subjects work together to foster critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills, all from a young age.

In addition to core subjects, students engage in a variety of specialist areas, including Visual Arts, where they explore creativity and expression through different mediums. Performing Arts allows students to develop an appreciation for sound, rhythm, and performance, while Physical Education promotes physical fitness and teamwork. World Languages, consisting of French or Spanish, offer opportunities to learn new cultures and enhance communication skills. Digital Learning is woven throughout the curriculum, using technology as a tool to support and enhance learning across all disciplines, fostering digital literacy and problem-solving skills. We also have regular Forest School/Outdoor Learning sessions in our beautiful woodland areas.

We offer small class sizes and differentiated instruction to cater to the individual needs of each student. From Grade 1 we also provide support for English as an Additional Language (EAL) and learning differences.

ACS Cobham, like most international schools, designs its own curriculum, based on the effective global educational practice delivered by an international faculty. Student progress in reading and mathematics is benchmarked against international norms. We use a range of anchoring standards, including UK Birth to Five Matters and US Common Core/ AERO curriculum. Other frames of reference include International Society for Technology Education, Next Generation Science Standards, College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies, Programme of Study for PSHE Education, National Standards for Art Education, Education for Sustainable Development, Forest School, and the Society of Health and Physical Educators.

Our curriculum is aligned to lead students toward advanced study in multiple challenging academic programmes, ensuring that they are ready to thrive throughout their school years and perform well on school-leaving qualifications. ACS Cobham offers courses leading to a US High School Diploma, US College Board Advanced Placement examinations, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

The curriculum at ACS Cobham and the British Prep system differ in structure, philosophy, and approach, making it hard to label one as “more rigorous” than the other. However, each offers strengths depending on the goals and needs of each student.

At ACS Cobham, we encourage a broad education with an emphasis on making connections across disciplines, aiming to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning skills. It prepares students for international mobility and adaptability, equipping them for success in diverse educational systems. In contrast, British prep schools typically focus on providing in-depth instruction in traditional core subjects and prioritise academic achievement (prioritising content mastery) which aims to prepare students for entry into elite secondary schools (often, academically selective grammar or independent schools). Compared to these schools, ACS Cobham provides a more holistic approach to education that prioritises student engagement, a broad and balanced curriculum, learning how to learn, personal independent inquiry, critical thinking, creativity, and technology-enhanced approaches to teaching.

Children often thrive in many different educational environments, so personal preferences and longer term ambitions can influence school choices. School climate, structure, and curriculum are important considerations. A culture of high expectations is key for both social emotional development and academic achievement, balancing structure and freedom. Parents often prioritise education that supports international mobility alongside global competence and opportunities–key value propositions at ACS Cobham.

Assessment in the Lower School is integral to the learning process, reflecting the enquiry-based nature of the curriculum. The school uses a variety of strategies to assess student progress, focusing on holistic development and formative assessment (rather than strict key-stage objectives and high stakes testing).

Ongoing assessment monitors student progress and guides instruction. Teachers observe students, engage in discussions, and incorporate self and peer assessments. Summative assessments, such as projects, written tasks, and performances, evaluate mastery at the end of a unit. Portfolios document a student’s learning journey, while standardised tools are used sparingly for diagnostics. Progress reports and conferences with parents highlight academic and social development. Reflection and feedback are central to growth, with students setting goals and teachers offering constructive guidance.

Thoughtful preparation is provided for students transitioning from Lower School to Middle School (Grades 5–8, ages 10–14). The school ensures that students are academically, socially, and emotionally ready for the increased expectations and independence of Middle School life.

In their final year of Lower School, students gradually take on more responsibility and participate in group activities that require leadership. They develop a greater sense of independence, personal confidence and interpersonal skills to prepare for the demands of Middle School, supported by a programme of events and visits that enable them to get to know the Middle School teachers and expectations.

Social and emotional growth is emphasised through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programmes that build resilience, teamwork, and communication skills. Cross-divisional collaboration, such as orientation events and buddy programs, eases the transition. With academic bridging programmes, communication with parents, and exposure to Middle School resources, students are supported as they approach this important milestone with confidence.

Our curriculum is highly transferable, making it suitable for families who may relocate or transition to different educational systems. The combination of a globally aligned curriculum, transferable skills, and personalised learning ensures they are equipped to succeed academically and socially in new environments.
