How the IB Prepared Charles for Biology at University
Can you introduce yourself?
I’m Charles, in Grade 12, and I’ve been at ACS Egham for four years.
How would you describe the school community?
It is a very welcoming community. Being in an international school, there is a lot of empathy and mutual understanding, as many of us have moved between countries. People are warm, which makes it easy to settle in. Academically, I have always felt supported, and teachers make you feel valued and accommodated. Overall, it has been a really positive experience.
What subjects are you studying?
I take Higher Level Biology, Geography, and Chemistry. At Standard Level I study English Language and Literature, Spanish, Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations, and PE. It is a very holistic mix, and I find that all of my subjects connect with my personal and interpersonal life. Biology, especially, is my passion. I have always loved the natural world, and I take great pleasure in exploring it.
How does the environment at ACS Egham influence your studies?
Coming from inner-city London, I had never been to a school surrounded by so much natural space before. Being in this environment really helps you focus. The tranquillity of nature has a positive energy that makes concentrating on tasks much easier.
Do you feel there is a strong student community?
Yes, definitely. Even something like the bus ride to school builds connections, as students from different year groups interact and there is a real sense of interconnectedness. Our bus driver is also part of that bond, he is so kind and we all appreciate him.
What extracurricular activities stand out for you?
The annual theatre productions have been really formative. I have been part of the band, singing and playing music, and it is very much that loud, high school rock-band vibe. I also loved the theatre trip to Malta, where we met students from other international schools and enjoyed the beautiful winter weather. And of course, MUN (Model United Nations) has given me brilliant experiences too.
What skills do you think you have developed through the IB?
Critical thinking is a big one. Whether it is an essay, an exam question, or a class discussion, you are encouraged to approach problems thoughtfully. I have also gained technical skills, such as photo editing and even some understanding of AI. These will be vital in the future.
Then there is resilience and time management. The IB workload is demanding, and balancing everything requires strong self-belief.
How would you describe your relationship with teachers?
Very strong. There is a lot of mentorship, especially in Grade 12 (Year 13). For internal assessments, teachers give detailed feedback, annotating work, making suggestions, and encouraging improvement. The IB is student-led, but here I have received an incredible amount of support. Beyond academics, teachers genuinely care about us as individuals, and they are always available for a chat.
What are your plans after graduation?
I want to study Zoology or Biology. I have applied to university at UCL, Queen Mary, Reading, and Oxford or Cambridge. For me, the priority is simply being able to study what I love.
What advice would you give to future students?
You will develop skills that go far beyond grades, including interpersonal, personal, technical, and mindset skills that you will carry with you for life. The IB at ACS Egham really sets you up for growth, both academically and personally.
